Watershed DNA featured in The New Yorker magazine on DNA surprises
Watershed DNA was featured in The New Yorker’s recent article, “The Family Fallout of DNA Surprises.”
This piece by Jennifer Wilson sheds light on the emotional impact of unexpected DNA discoveries – a journey that can be both deeply challenging and transformative. Watershed DNA is committed to meeting people in these moments with compassion and guidance, helping them process new information, navigate family dynamics, share with others, and find the path forward.
According to the article, “A 2025 YouGov poll found that one in five Americans has taken a direct-to-consumer DNA test. A few years ago, a research team at Baylor College of Medicine surveyed more than twenty-three thousand customers of these kits and learned that three percent of them had discovered that a person whom they’d believed to be their biological parent wasn’t … If the ratio holds, that means around two million Americans who have taken one of these tests are NPEs (Not Parent Expected or misattributed parentage).”
DNA surprises are never simple, and every person’s story is unique. I’m grateful to see national attention on this complex and often isolating experience – and proud to continue walking alongside those who find themselves in any role or at any part of this journey.
